  Heart Health
  Updated December 9, 2004

February is National Heart Month. In recognition, TIME once again teams up with experts from the American Heart Association, the nation’s oldest and most-respected organization dedicating to fighting cardiovascular disease in all its forms, to bring our readers the latest, possibly life-saving information on the most important health topic of all: keeping a healthy heart.

More than 64 million Americans have some form of cardiovascular disease, from high blood pressure, congenital heart defects, to stroke and heart failure. In fact, it’s the number one cause of death for men — and women — in the U.S., year after year.

No one is immune to the dangers. Knowledge, however, can be the difference between a medical emergency and a long, healthy life.

Planned Editiorial Topics:
Cholesterol:
Lowering one’s cholesterol level is a great start, but there’s a lot more to the story.
Diabetes: A pound here and a pound there can set off a deadly chain of events that leads to diabetes and then heart disease. How can one stop the process before it’s too late?
Exercise: The journey to a healthy heart starts with one step. We look at several ways to keep the heart healthy.
Diet: You are what you eat, and what you eat can help determine how long you live.
Women: Once thought of as a man’s disease, heart disease is also the number one killer of women. We explain what every woman needs to know.
Surgery of Tomorrow, Today: Cardiovascular surgery is increasingly hi-tech. The AHA president looks at the latest life-saving medical advances.
Heart Disease, By the Numbers: All the latest statistics, including some that will come as a surprise.

TIME and the American Heart Association
Founded in 1924, the American Heart Association (AHA) is a national, voluntary, not-for-profit health agency dedicated to reducing disability and death from cardiovascular disease and stroke, which together kill nearly one million Americans each year. This is the third consecutive year TIME has partnered with the AHA to bring the latest information on heart health to our readers.
