Janice C. Simpson, an assistant managing editor of TIME, edits the Society section of the magazine.

Simpson joined TIME as a correspondent in the magazine's New York bureau in 1979. She was posted to the Mexico City bureau in 1984 and returned to New York a year later as a writer for the World section. She was named staff correspondent in 1988, deputy bureau chief in 1989, associate editor in 1990, and New York bureau chief in 1993 where she coordinated the magazine's news coverage for the mid-Atlantic region and New England states. Simpson was then named deputy chief of correspondents where she supervised 11 domestic bureaus and coordinated the magazine's coverage of the Oklahoma City bombing, capture of the Unabomber and the O.J Simpson trial.

Simpson has written or contributed to many memorable TIME cover stories, most notably "Black Renaissance" (October 1994); "Tarnished Victory" (Olympic skaters Nancy Kerrigan and Tonya Harding, January 1994); "Lock 'Em Up" (on anti-crime sentiment, February 1994); "Hollywood & Politics" (1992); "A Hero's Welcome" (on Nelson Mandela's trip to the U.S., July 1990); "The Rotting of the Big Apple" (September 1990); "Getting Tough" (a profile of New Jersey high school principal Joe Clark, February 1988); "Kids Who Sell Crack" (May 1988).

From 1997- to February 2002, Simpson edited the magazine's Arts & Media section as senior editor. She edited covers including "Yep, I'm Gay" on Ellen DeGeneres (April 1997), the Harry Potter phenomenon and the rise of reality TV. She edited TIME's special issue on the top artists and entertainers of the 20th Century, launched the magazine's "Innovators" series with profiles of creative people, and edited TIME's "America's Best" profiles on artists now at the top of their fields.

She has also directed and edited many cover projects, including "The Return of Star Wars (February 1997); "If You Were Steven Spielberg, You'd Be Smiling Too" (May 1997); "That's All, Folks" (on why Jerry Seinfeld decided to end his series; January 1998); "The Sound and the Fury of Toni Morrison" (January 1998), and "Star Wars: A Complete Guide to The Phantom Menace" (including a Bill Moyers' interview with George Lucas about the spiritual side of the Force; April 1999).

Before joining TIME, Simpson worked at Woman's Day, Johnson Publishing Company, Essence and The Wall Street Journal.

Ms. Simpson earned her B.A. in Liberal Arts from Sarah Lawrence College (and has served as a member of its Board of Trustees). She attended Columbia University as a Walter Bagehot Fellow, and is a member of The Columbia Journalism Review Editorial Board. She was born, raised and still lives in New York City with her husband Kamau Adilifu, a musician.
