Bill Saporito became TIME’s first editor-at-large in March 2001.
A 17-year Time Inc. veteran, Saporito joined TIME in 1996 as a senior editor
where he has directed the magazine’s coverage of business, the economy, personal
finance, and sports. In this new position, Saporito will continue to edit business and sports, but will also be doing more of his own writing and reporting.
Saporito has guided TIME's coverage utilizing a dedicated business team in New York plus correspondents stationed in more than two-dozen bureaus worldwide. He also edits monthly special reports delivered to 1.8 million professional/ managerial readers included in TIME's 4 million U.S. circulation, reports
focused on "Your Business" (of special interest to entrepreneurs and managers).
In 1999, he also became TIME's sports editor. His cover story, "What a Kick!,"
celebrated the world-cup victory of the U.S. women's soccer team (July 19,
1999). He also directed TIME's coverage of the 2000 Olympics in Sydney,
Australia, and produced covers on Tiger Woods (August 14, 2000) and Dale
Earnhardt (March 5, 2001).
Saporito served as top editor on TIME’s "Builders and Titans" issue naming the
20 most influential business people of the past 100 years. It was one of six
issues in the "TIME 100: People of the Century" series. He has also produced two Person of the Year issues.
Previously, he was a senior editor at Fortune magazine, where he was a member of the publication's Board of Editors. He began his career at The New York Daily News.
A graduate of Bucknell University (BA) and Syracuse University (MA), he and his wife, Laurie, live in Manhattan. Saporito enjoys soccer, skiing, and tennis.
