Michael Elliott is the Editor of TIME Asia, based in Hong Kong. His column, "Global Agenda," appears regularly in all TIME editions.
Previously Elliott served as Editor-at-large based in New York, writing his column as well as lead stories on al Qaeda, the war on terror, and international relations.
He was a key player in TIME's coverage evolving from the Sept. 11 attacks on America. Elliott also served as editor (Feb. 2003-April 2004) of TIME Canada, one of that country's most well-read news sources.
Elliott, who joined TIME in May 2001, is an award-winning writer and editor. Elliott worked for The Economist from 1984 to 1993, where he served as Washington bureau chief and was the founding author of two columns, "Bagehot" and "Lexington"- the first columns ever published in The Economist. From 1993 to 2000, Elliott worked for Newsweek, where he started as the magazine's diplomatic editor and two years later became editor of Newsweek International. During his tenure there, the magazine won the Overseas Press Club award for foreign reporting three times. From 2000 to 2001 he was Editor-in-Chief of eCountries, an internet based news and information service. He has written three books, and written and presented many documentary films that have been shown all over the world, including, for Britain's Channel 4, the BAFTA-shortlisted series "The Clintons." He is a regular commentator on television around the world, especially with CNN and CNN International, and with the Charlie Rose Show.
Born in Liverpool, England, Elliott received two law degrees from Oxford University before beginning a teaching career that resulted in a tenured position at the London School of Economics. He has spent most of his adult life in the United States, and resides in Bronxville, New York with his wife and two daughters.
